about

"In Seattle, Washington the members of the young trio GravelRoad dug deep
into artists they recognize as the masters of modern dark music, the blues
of Junior Kimbrough, Burnside, T-Model Ford and Fred McDowell, until they
appeared around 2005 as the band with a vision inspired by the old mentors.
This summer I saw them backing T-Model Ford at the Deep Blues Festival in
Lake Elmo, Minnesota.
The trio of Stefan Zillioux, Martin Reinsel and Jon Kirby Newman live up to
their high ambitions on their album Shot the Devil (Uncle Larry's Records).
It is dark, magical and with a ferocious drive. Their music conjure up
images of love and death, madness and revenge, sex and redemption. They play
hard-hitting instrumentals that to me sound like pure cinematic soundtrack
blues music, like the riffs on the opening cut "Fred # 3", that might be
named after Fred McDowell for all I know. The title cut is a winner, a
classic badman ballad performed not unlike Nick Cave's version of "Stagger
Lee". This band is easily among the best in the current wave of punk blues
bands with a set of musical references similar to the great Black Keys and
at the same time coming up with something completely different. And that's
no mean achievement. They're great."
